Muscat Surrealism سريالية مسقط

The Muscat born and Dubai based digital artist Fahad Salim invokes early 20th century surrealism with his work to explore daydreams, personal memories, social causes and cultural symbols. Through painting, digital drawing, collage, glitching, editing and technological manipulation, Fahad creates his very own Surrealism 2.0 in the age of the blockchain and cryptoart. ARQAAM is presenting two of Fahad Salim’s works, ‘Black Cat’, and ‘Judgement Day’, available for collectors through our exhibition, uniquely marking the first NFT creations by an Omani artist

BLACK CAT

Since 2014, Fahad Salim has been chronicling his lucid daydreams through his digital paintings. For several years, bodiless faces would emerge and float around in these visceral daydreams, leaving the artist immersed in an intense emotional state afterwards. Drawing on this intensity, Fahad would depict scenes and figures from these dreams during his vigorous studio practice. Playing with symbols that carry a lot of cultural ambiguity, from the black cat to a floating head, Fahad Salim generously offers us a gateway into his dream world, and personal emotions.

JUDGEMENT DAY

Continuing with re-activations of early 20th century surrealist aesthetics as a lens to look at puzzling emotions and conflicting thoughts today, Fahad Salim’s work ‘Judgement Day’ explores power, strength, and control. Figures of a fluid gender identity open up their flesh, evoking questions on shame, sadness and joy, while being monitored and perhaps policed by distant higher powers.
